Hidden Gems in the UK - Discover Sussex

Huge thanks to Sussex Modern for hosting and introducing us to Sussex.

Where we visited and stayed:

The Towner Eastbourne. We saw the 'Barbara Hepworth: Art and Life' exhibition (ends 3 Sept) and ate lunch at the gallery's recently opened 'Light' restaurant, which was delicious. From 28 September – 14 April 2024, Towner Eastbourne will be hosting the Turner Prize, one of the best-known prizes for the visual arts in the world. A must visit! @townergallery

In celebration of the Turner Prize coming to Eastbourne, Eastbourne Alive will be delivering a series of community events that will provide inclusive cultural and creative opportunities for children and young people in particular. @eastbournealive

We visited Rathfinny Wine Estate, one of Sussex's many wine estates. Its Sussex Sparkling is DEVINE. We ate lunch at the Summer Kitchen at the Flint Barns, which is open until the end of August. The estate is open all year round for wine tours and other dining experiences at its two restaurants. Also walking distance to Alfriston village, which is gorgeous and full of independent shops and well worth a visit. @rathfinnyestate

We went to the wonderful Charleston. Former home to artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant in the early years of the twentieth century. This is where the Bloomsbury group came together to imagine society differently. The house is filled to the brim with ceramics, murals, artworks, stencilling and mementos that reflect an extraordinary group of friends and lovers who shared a colourful life together. It needs to be seen to be believed. Charleston will be opening a second location in Lewes this September. @charlestontrust

We stayed at The Port Hotel in Eastbourne. A lovingly restored, 19-bedroom, Victorian Townhouse hotel with a relaxed restaurant and a cocktail bar. The room was extremely comfortable, and we loved the stand-alone bath with views out to sea (which we also swam in). Magic! @stayatport

Just one hour and twenty-five minutes from London, Eastbourne is easily accessible by train. From mid-September to mid-December, there will be a bus service from Towner Eastbourne that will travel to Seven Sisters Visitor Centre in the Downs, Alfriston, Charleston in Firle and then on to the soon to open Charleston in Lewes.

We genuinely loved our Sussex stay. So many places to discover and hidden gems. To find out more on what Sussex has to over, please visit www.sussexmodern.org.uk.
